The National Institute of Design
(NID) is arguably the top design school in India. It’s main campus, located in Ahmedadad
, offers four year degrees in eight areas
of design including animation, exhibition, product, ceramic & glass, furniture, graphic and textile as well as film & video communication.

Students must have at least a 3.0 GPA to apply. The NID exchange is dependent on an equal number of students participating from each campus every academic year, therefore the number of accepted students may vary from semester to semester. Candidates should demonstrate maturity, flexibility, patience, a tolerance for differences and an open attitude. Students should be able to adjust to different cultures and stresses and should demonstrate assertiveness and self-direction. Upon the completion of the online application, applicants will be notified about their acceptance.
Students are able to study courses alongside Indian and other international students. The exchange program is open to students hoping to study animation film design, ceramic and glass design, exhibition design, film and video communication, furniture design, graphic design, product design, and textile design.
Transfer of credit:
Students must earn the equivalent of the grade of C or higher in a given course to be eligible for transfer credit. Students are required to take the necessary steps to ensure that transcripts are received from the university upon return to VCU.
NID accepts exchange student applications for the spring semester only, January to the middle of May. Applications for the spring semester are due by the October 1.
Housing facilities are available at NID but are not guaranteed. NID will assist in locating housing at a local residence or hotel if on campus housing is not available.
Tuition and Fees:
Tuition for VCU students is based on VCU tuition and fees. Students will pay housing costs directly to NID.
Students are responsible for all transportation to and from NID. Students will also be responsible for arranging the necessary visa, cost of books, equipment, accommodations, meals, health insurance, medical services and all other consumables and incidental expenses arising out of the exchange. Each student must obtain sufficient health and third party accident insurance to cover his or her stay abroad.
